Listen close, because I’m about to tell you something the world often forgets to whisper: your transition into parenthood isn’t just a medical event. It’s a coronation.
Whether you’re just starting to dream of a family, currently carrying life in your belly, or navigating the wild, sleepless waters of the fourth trimester, there is a crown resting on your head. Sometimes it feels heavy. Sometimes it feels like it’s slipping. But it is yours.
As we move through the sacred window of Black Maternal Health Week, I want to invite everyone: every mother, every birthing person, every legacy-builder: into a deeper conversation. This ain’t just a blog; it’s a testimony. It’s about how we take the statistics, the struggle, and the sacred purpose of birth and turn it into a lifestyle of reclamation.
Birth. Healing. Becoming. Support. Growth.
The Ancestral Thread: Why We Reclaim
Long before there were sterile white walls and beeping monitors, there were circles of women. There were memory keepers who knew the scent of herbs that calmed a racing heart and the rhythmic songs that guided a baby earthside. Our ancestors understood that birthing a child was also the birthing of a new version of yourself.
In my years as a BSN RN and a visionary in this space, I’ve seen the gap between what birth is and what it should be. Reclaiming your crown means reaching back to that ancestral wisdom: where birth was sacred and the mother was protected: and pulling it into the modern day. It’s about bridging the gap between clinical excellence and soulful care.
If you’re feeling disconnected from your power? Yours might be the heart I’m speaking to today. We aren't just surviving the medical system; we are thriving through a Bloodline and Bedside transformation.
The Reality Check: The Data Behind the Crown
We have to talk about the fire we’re walking through to get to the throne. The statistics for Black and Brown mothers in this country are more than just numbers on a page: they are heartbeats that stopped too soon. According to the CDC, Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women. Most of these deaths are preventable.

This is why we focus so heavily on advocacy. As a nurse, I’ve sat at the bedside and seen how the system can overlook the very people it’s meant to serve. But here’s the visionary shift: we are moving from a "survival" framework to a "Vitality Framework." We aren't just trying to not die; we are demanding to live well. We are centering joy, agency, and healing.
Whether you are working with doctors, nurses, midwives, or doulas, your voice is the most important instrument in the room. This is why I always tell my community: you need a plan. Not just a "if everything goes right" plan, but a sacred blueprint. You can grab my Crowning Legacy Birth Plan Free Download to start building that foundation today.
Pre-Pregnancy & Antepartum: The Foundation of the Throne
Reclaiming your crown starts before the "plus" sign appears on the test. It starts with how you treat your vessel.
- Nervous System Regulation: We carry generational stress in our bodies. Healing starts with the breath.
- Education as Power: Don't wait until you're in labor to learn about your rights. Watch the experts. My YouTube channel (Miss Carla BSN RN official) is a treasure trove of "real talk" regarding maternal health, nursing perspectives, and birth worker advocacy.
- Building Your Village: Who is in your corner? Is your provider listening to you? If they aren't, it’s time to find someone who does. Our doula directory is a great place to find kin who understand the sacredness of this journey.
Intrapartum: The Sacred Act of Giving Birth
When the waves of labor come, you aren't just enduring pain; you are opening a portal. This is the moment where the "sass, scars, and sacred purpose" all meet.
Whether you choose a hospital, a birthing center, or a home birth, you deserve to feel like royalty. I’ve seen it all and lived to tell it: from the high-tech interventions to the quiet, candlelit arrivals. The key is informed consent. Every time a nurse or doctor walks into your room, they are entering your sacred space. You have the right to ask "Why?" and "What are my alternatives?"

Postpartum: The Restoration of the Queen
The world celebrates the baby; we celebrate the mother. The fourth trimester is often when the crown feels the heaviest because the support systems tend to disappear once the baby is here.
We need to treat postpartum as a period of "ethering": reversing the erosive effects of the outside world through radical self-care. This is why I created tools that help you stay grounded.
- Wrap yourself in legacy: When you move through your home in those early weeks, how do you feel? Our signature robes at crowninglegacy.com are designed to make you feel draped in the dignity you deserve. It’s a ritual of putting on your strength every single morning.
- Digital Sisterhood: You don't have to navigate the "baby blues" or the identity shift alone. Download our app, crowningLegacy.love, to connect with a community that understands the nuances of this walk.
Policy, Nurses, and the Changing Landscape
It’s an era of change. We are seeing more focus on maternal health policy than ever before, with the "Momnibus" Act and various state-level initiatives aiming to extend postpartum Medicaid coverage. As birth workers and nurses, we are the frontline.
We aren't just providers; we are advocates. I’m constantly keeping my eyes on the policy shifts that affect how we care for our families. It’s about ensuring that every nurse at the bedside is trained in equity and every mother has access to support lines and sister care.

Rituals for the Daily Reclamation
How do you honor maternal health every day? It’s in the small, sacred moments.
- The Morning Offering: Before you check your phone or tend to the baby, place your hand on your heart. Acknowledge the life you have sustained.
- The Evening Release: Wash away the day’s anxieties. Use water as a balm and a bridge to your peace.
- The Testimony: Share your story. When we speak our truths: the hard parts and the holy parts: we give others permission to do the same. This is how we build a Crowning Legacy.
A Final Word from Ms. Carla
If you’re reading this and you feel tired? I see you. If you’re reading this and you’re terrified? I’ve been there.
Birth is a rite of passage that was never meant to be walked alone. It was meant to be a collective lifting. You are part of a lineage of survivors, creators, and queens. Your health: mental, physical, and spiritual: is the foundation upon which the next generation stands.
Don’t let anyone dim the shine of your crown. Claim your birth, claim your healing, and claim your joy.
