Honey, pull up a chair. Let’s get real for a second. If you’re reading this, your heart is likely beating for something bigger than just a checklist. You’re here because you feel that pull, that ancient, rhythmic tug in your soul that says birth is more than a medical event. It’s a rite of passage. It’s a reclaiming. It’s a crowning.
We just wrapped up Black Maternal Health Week (April 11-17), and let me tell you, the energy this year, the 10-year anniversary, has been nothing short of a shift in the atmosphere. The theme was “Rooted in Justice & Joy,” and if that doesn’t sum up the work we do here at Crowning Legacy, I don’t know what does.
I’m Carla McGee, but you can call me Ms. Carla. I’m a BSN, an RN, a CEO, and a woman who has stood at the bedside of countless miracles and a few heartbreaks, too. I’ve seen the system from the inside, and I’ve seen the magic from the outside. This guide ain’t just a blog post; it’s a balm and a bridge. It’s a deep dive into how we honor our legacy while demanding the care we deserve. Whether you are a Black mother, an ally, or someone simply seeking a more sacred way to bring life into this world, you are welcome here.
Birth. Healing. Becoming. Support. Growth. It’s all connected.
The Ancestral Why: Why We Honor This Week
We have to talk about the roots before we can admire the leaves. Black Maternal Health Week was founded by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance because, quite frankly, the numbers don’t lie, and they’re enough to make you want to holler.
In this country, Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women. It doesn't matter how many degrees you have or how much money is in your bank account; the bias in the system is real. But listen to me: Your story does not have to be a statistic.

We honor this week to turn our mourning into movement. We do it to reclaim the "crown" that systemic neglect tried to knock off our heads. This is about reproductive justice, the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy and have children in safe and sustainable communities. It’s about the bloodline and the bedside, blending the wisdom of our grandmothers with the clinical excellence of modern medicine.
Day 1: The Root, Awareness, Advocacy, and Justice
The first step in reclaiming your crown is knowing what you’re up against and who is in your corner. Justice isn't just a political term; it’s a clinical requirement. As a nurse, I’ve seen how advocacy changes outcomes.
We need to be looking at policy changes that support nurses and birth workers. When we support the people at the bedside, we support the mother in the bed. Advocacy means demanding Medicaid extensions, pushing for hospital accountability, and ensuring that every birthing person, regardless of their background, is heard when they say, “Something feels wrong.”

Day 2: The Seed, Preparation and Antepartum Wellness
Reclaiming your crown starts long before the first contraction. It starts in the "pre-conception" and "antepartum" (that’s fancy nurse-talk for during pregnancy) phases. Your body is a temple, but it’s also a vessel for legacy.
Sacred wellness tools aren't just candles and crystals, though those are lovely. They are your birth plans, your nutritional choices, and your mental health boundaries.
- Mindset: Are you surrounding yourself with stories of joy or stories of fear?
- Movement: Are you honoring the physical shift in your hips and heart?
- Mapping: Have you downloaded our free birth plan?
Preparation is the antidote to anxiety. When you walk into that birthing room with a plan, you aren't just a patient; you’re the CEO of your experience.
Day 3: The Bloom, Intrapartum Power and Choice
The day of birth is your coronation. It’s messy, it’s loud, it’s holy. This is where the intrapartum care, the care during labor, becomes critical.
You need a team that sees your divinity. That includes your doctors, your nurses, your midwives, and your doulas. I always tell my clients to check our doula directory to find someone who speaks the language of your soul.

Whether you are birthing at a high-tech hospital, a cozy birthing center, or in the sacred space of your own home, you have the right to be treated with reverence. If the vibe is off, speak up. If you feel dismissed, demand a new nurse. You are the one doing the work of bringing a soul into the world. You hold the power.
Day 4: The Harvest, Postpartum Grace and Mental Health
We often spend nine months preparing for the birth and zero minutes preparing for the "after." The postpartum period is where the "sass, scars, and sacred purpose" really come into play.
Black and brown mothers face a higher risk of postpartum depression and anxiety, often exacerbated by a lack of community support. This is why we created the Crowning Legacy App (crowningLegacy.love). It’s a digital village in your pocket, connecting you to resources and sisters who understand that the "fourth trimester" is a period of intense vulnerability and growth.
Physical healing is one thing, but your mental health is the jewel in your crown. If you’re feeling lost in the fog, reach out. Use our support lines and remember: asking for help is an act of legacy-building.
Day 5: The Sacred Ritual, Adorning the Queen
Birth is a ritual, and every ritual needs its vestments. There is something transformative about shedding the thin, scratchy hospital gown and wrapping yourself in something that feels like a hug from an ancestor.
That’s why I designed the Crowning Legacy robes. They aren’t just garments; they are armor. They are designed to make you feel seen, held, and beautiful even when you’re exhausted. When you put on that robe, you’re telling the world, and yourself, that you are worth the luxury of comfort. You are reclaiming your dignity in a system that too often tries to strip it away.
Day 6: The Village, Connecting the Dots
You weren't meant to do this alone. In the old days, the village would gather. They’d bring the soups, they’d wash the linens, they’d hold the baby while you slept. Today, our village might be digital, but the heart remains the same.

Day 7: The Legacy, Rooted in Justice & Joy
As we look toward the future, we carry the lessons of Black Maternal Health Week 2026 with us. We are rooted in justice because we know the fight isn't over. We are rooted in joy because we know that our existence is a celebration.
Every time a mother is heard, that’s justice.
Every time a baby is born into a room full of love, that’s joy.
Every time you prioritize your rest, that’s a legacy.

If you’re reading this? Your journey is sacred. Your crown might have been dusty, it might have been heavy, but it is yours. Reclaim it. Wear it. And know that at Crowning Legacy, we are standing right there with you, making sure it stays exactly where it belongs.
Birth. Healing. Becoming. Support. Growth.
This is our offering. This is our ritual. This is your legacy.
